Studded Tires in Quebec and Ontario: Rules, Dates and When They Help
When studded tires are allowed in Quebec and Ontario, the difference between studdable and studded, and when studs are worth it compared with studless winter tires.
Studs are small metal pins set into a winter tire’s tread. They give the best grip there is on glare ice, but the rules for using them differ a lot between Quebec and Ontario.
The rules
Quebec: studded tires are allowed from October 15 to May 1. Outside those dates they must come off.
Ontario: studded tires are allowed only for residents of Northern Ontario, during the winter season, and for drivers visiting from outside Ontario for a short stay. Drivers who live in southern Ontario, including the Greater Toronto Area, Ottawa and the southwest, cannot use them. The Ministry of Transportation sets the exact districts, dates and stud requirements, so check its current rules before you buy.
If you live in Quebec and drive into southern Ontario in winter, keep this in mind.
Studdable vs studded
A studdable tire has moulded holes in the tread ready for studs; it is sold without them. A tire shop installs the studs, and they have to go in before the tire is driven, so new tires are the time to do it. A studdable tire also works well with the holes left empty, as a regular studless winter tire.
Our product pages say whether a tire is studdable, and season-and-size pages tell you how many of the winter tires in that size can take studs.
Are studs worth it?
Studs help most on glare ice and hard-packed snow: freezing rain, rural roads that are not salted, steep driveways and hills. On bare pavement they are noisier and can grip slightly less, and they wear the road.
Modern studless winter tires come close to studded grip on most icy roads, with a quieter ride and no date limits. For most drivers in cities and on salted highways, a good studless winter tire is enough.
Studs make sense if you live where ice is common, drive early in the morning on untreated roads, or regularly face hills and freezing rain, and the rules where you live allow them.
Tips
- Studded tires go on all four wheels, never only two.
- Drive gently for the first few hundred kilometres so the studs seat properly.
- Mark the season’s removal date in your calendar: May 1 in Quebec.
